How one woman's vision of healing, connection, and compassion has grown into a peaceful oasis supporting visitors and the community.

When Linda Bruce first walked onto the property that would become Soulful Prairies, the land was, by her own description, an absolute mess. But she saw something beyond its condition. Purchasing the property in 2010 marked a first step in fulfilling her lifelong dream of owning a farm. The journey that unfolded would transform the land into a peaceful sanctuary for people, horses, and other animals—a place grounded in healing, kindness, and connection.

“I always say Soulful Prairies has guided me since the day I walked on the land. I try to listen,” Linda says.

That sense of listening—to the land, to the animals, and to the people who find their way there—has helped shape Soulful Prairies into what it is today.

Linda's vision of owning a farm extended beyond the land itself. She wanted to create a peaceful place where people could heal and animals would be safe, knowing they had a forever home. Her approach to working with animals reflects a belief that relationships should be built on mutual respect rather than dominance.

“The horse world can be about dominance,” she explains, “and I truly believe that the critters and humans need to have an equal say in the relationship between them.”

That philosophy extends to the property's natural environment, where Linda and her team strive to allow wildlife and nature to flourish with as little disruption as possible.

A place for healing and connection

At the heart of Soulful Prairies is Linda's work in Equine Gestalt Therapy, an approach she uses to help people work through difficult experiences and unresolved feelings. With specialized training in this practice, she creates a safe space for individuals to explore painful experiences, including those rooted in difficult childhoods.

Linda believes people can change and move toward greater happiness and ease, provided they are willing to do the work. That process takes determination and vulnerability, but she has witnessed its impact firsthand.

“The scars left by heartache and trauma are real,” she says, “and the relief that comes with healing is life-changing.”

Her vision has attracted people who come for therapy, participate in retreats and group experiences, volunteer their time, or contribute their skills and support. What brings them together is perhaps best expressed in a compliment Linda hears often: “I feel at peace the minute I drive through the front gate.”

In a world that Linda feels has become increasingly mechanical, she sees Soulful Prairies as a place where genuine connection remains central.

“I care deeply about each person who comes to Soulful Prairies and want them to have a space where they feel they belong and can truly be themselves,” she says.

For Linda, the growth of Soulful Prairies has been a journey of personal discovery as well. She finds satisfaction in seeing people live more authentic, joyful lives, caring for the animals, developing the land thoughtfully, and creating an environment that welcomes everyone who arrives.

She is also candid about the challenges. Balancing a commitment to compassionate care with the practical demands of running a small business has required her to develop systems, procedures, and new skills. Wearing multiple hats can be both exhilarating and exhausting.

Still, her guiding principle remains simple: follow her passion while maintaining a sustainable pace. The horses, Equine Gestalt sessions, retreats, and team-building experiences will continue to anchor the organization as it evolves.

From connection to community giving

The same philosophy that guides Linda's work at Soulful Prairies informs her commitment to the wider community.

“I have always felt it's important to continually find ways to contribute to individuals struggling,” she says. “That can mean anything from financially, emotionally and beyond. We all have the ability to give of some sort of resource, and this creates a true sense of community, kindness and connection.”

She sees a parallel in the behavior of horses, whose survival depends on the contributions of individual members of the herd.

“What is good for one is good for all,” Linda says. “It is a beautiful life for all.”

That belief inspired Soulful Prairies to turn an experience created during the COVID-19 pandemic into an annual opportunity to help others.

Sound in the Sand began as a way to give people a place to get out of the house and reconnect during the first year of the pandemic. The property's open space allowed participants to spread out while enjoying an experience centered on sound and connection. Initially offered without charge, the event eventually evolved into an annual fundraiser benefiting a local organization in need.

For Linda, Sound in the Sand is about more than an event. It offers an opportunity to slow down as the holidays approach and remember what matters most.

This year, Linda has designated Christmas Clearing House as the fundraiser's beneficiary. The long-standing community program, organized by the Rotary Club of Woodstock, helps local families who need assistance during the holiday season. Its work reflects the same principle of neighbors helping neighbors that Linda seeks to foster at Soulful Prairies.

“I have heard about Christmas Clearing House for years,” she says. “I have never been involved in supporting their goals but always admired the mission.”

Her decision reflects a conviction that meaningful change often begins close to home.

“It feels so much more doable when we focus on helping our community instead of trying to change a state or a country,” Linda explains. “If each community took care of those within it, the impact would be huge.”

For Rotary Club of Woodstock, Linda's choice to support Christmas Clearing House offers an opportunity to connect with someone whose work takes a distinctive approach to healing while sharing a familiar commitment to community service.

After more than a decade of building Soulful Prairies, Linda remains grateful for the experience and the people who have become part of its story. She continues to learn, adapt, and find new ways to bring her vision to life. Her hope is that the kindness practiced at Soulful Prairies will extend beyond its gates, as people carry their own growth and newfound connections into the wider world. It is a vision rooted in a simple idea: when we care for one another, we strengthen the community we all share.

And sometimes, as Linda Bruce's story demonstrates, that begins with listening to a piece of land—and having the courage to imagine what it might become.
